Interknit ‘Lockdown 2020’ Competition – brief and entry rules

The Interknit ‘Lockdown 2020’ Competition is a national contest that challenges contestants to design a knitted beanie to commemorate the unique experiences of Lockdown 2020.

The competition is free to enter for anyone, no technical prior knowledge is required to win this competition.

Brief

The competition is inspired by the Australian Government’s directive to Lockdown from March 2020 in response to the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic.

ENTRANTS ARE NOT EXPECTED TO KNIT THEIR DESIGN – Please submit a drawing on paper, A4 is preferred (then upload a photograph), or a computer rendered image in .JPG format, a maximum resolution of 300 dpi and a maximum file size of 1 mb each.

Entrants should consider the nature of machine knitting and how it differs from hand knitting when designing their beanie. Examples of some beanies Interknit has manufactured are provided to give an insight into what is possible to manufacture and further insight is provided below:

  • For commercial viability, the beanie will be knitted in Acrylic or an Acrylic Wool blend of yarns;
  • Limit yarn colours to no more than three (3) different colours;
  • Interknit do NOT manufacture beanies on circular knitting machines, therefore there will be seam (usually back centre) on the beanie;
  • Interknit prefer to keep everything Australian Made, therefore pompom colours for the finished commercially viable design are limited to black or white;
  • Knitted in words (see example images) are limited to 15 characters;
  • Interknit are prepared to EMBROIDER a design on a knitted beanie (see example images) and if you wish to design a beanie with embroidery your colours are unlimited but please keep font sizes to a finished height of 2cm;
  • Interknit reserve the right to modify your winning design slightly to make it achievable for flatbed knitting;

Please do not include any words that are copyrighted to a third party; any profanities or otherwise offensive words/images or any business logos in your design. Slang that has developed as a result of Lockdown 2020 is allowed eg. ‘Rona; ‘Iso’.

Entrants must submit a short description of their concept explaining their inspiration. In addition, they should submit at least one and up to ten images showcasing their design.

Entrants are strongly encouraged to use the Australian sense of humour and mateship during our times of tragedy to inspire their entry. At least one of the submitted images should be a front image of the beanie design. Additional supporting images could include drawings, sketches, renders or 3D-models but these are optional extras.

Judging criteria

We are looking for beanie designs that are economically viable to manufacture AND appeal to a wide audience of potential buyers.

Entries will be judged on how original the idea is, how visually appealing the design is and how saleable the finished design would be. In addition, consideration will be given to how practical the design is to manufacture commercially.

Who can enter?

The competition is free to enter for anyone over the age of 18, and for under 18’s with express permission from their parents, in any state or territory of Australia, regardless of whether they are a professional designer, non-designer, or a student. Entries from individuals or teams will be accepted and entrants may enter more than one design, if they wish. However, entrants will need to fill out and submit a separate entry form for each design they submit.

Each image should be a single image, free from any logos or text. They should be JPGs with a maximum resolution of 300 dpi and a maximum file size of 1 mb each.

For teams, one member of the team should submit the entry. There will be a special field where all the names of the team can be entered.
